When you initially create your eCom store, by default, it is connected to either a shoplightspeed.com or webshopapp.com domain depending on your location. Lightspeed eCom automatically generates your store's subdomain based on the store name you specified.
You should connect your store to a personalized domain as soon as your store is transaction ready. This is important for branding and search engine optimization (SEO). When you are ready, you have 2 options for choosing a domain name for your store:
If you do not own a domain, you must purchase a domain. Buying a domain gives you ownership rights over the root domain and allows you to connect this domain name to any website you control.
Domains are purchased and managed from domain providers (registrars).
Your domain provider will have a feature allowing you to manage the settings that will connect your domain to your new online store. For example, if you purchased your domain name from GoDaddy, you will need to log on to GoDaddy as part of the steps to connect your domain to your Lightspeed eCom store.
If you own a domain, you may want to keep your former site and have a new domain for your online store.
You can reuse an existing domain (connected to another website) for your eCom store. Or, you can connect your eCom store to a different subdomain (on an existing domain); this would allow you to keep both your previous site and your eCom store active on the same domain.
- If you have the following domain: www.example.com
- You can connect your eCom store to www.example.com, and retire your old website
- Or, you can connect your eCom store to shop.example.com and keep both sites active.
NOTE: Retiring your old website may cause downtime and a loss of SEO. In order to preserve your search engine ranking you should redirect your previous site's URLs (internet addresses of web pages) to your eCom store's new web page addresses.
