Configuring discount rules

You can click on SALES > Discount rules in the navigation menu at the left side of the screen. Here you can create discount rules that will be applied with certain transactions. They differ from coupon codes, where customers actually have to enter a code. The rules will always be applied if an order meets the conditions. Discounts are calculated using the original amount.

  1. Click the green plus icon at the top the screen to create a discount rule.
  2. A pop-up window will open, where you can enter a Title and Type. Enter a name that is recognizable for you in the Title field. It will only be mentioned in the back office. In the drop-down menu next to Type you can choose from several options:
    • Buy X items get free shipping – If a customer orders a product once or several times within the same order, this discount code may be used. The customer will not have to pay shipping costs then.
    • Free shipping on orders over x EUR – It was already possible to create a discount code for a shipping method through SALES > Coupon codes, but with this option it is possible to connect free order shipment to the order amount. For example, you can configure that customers do not have to pay shipping costs if the order amount exceeds €100.
    • Get X discount on order Y EUR – Here you can configure the amount from which discount codes will be applied, where you can also configure the discount amount. For example, if customers order for €100 or more, they will get €10 discount.
    • Get x discount for repeat customers – If there are customers who repeatedly have placed orders in your online store, you can use this discount rule to create a discount code for them. You can indicate the minimum number of orders from which this discount code will be applied and the amount or percentage that will be given as discount.
    • Buy one get one free – Here you can create something similar to a bundle discount. For example, if a customer buys product X three times, he/she will receive one product for free. The free product is part of the three purchased products. Actually, it boils down to buy two, get one free.
    • Get X discount on all items in one or more categories – Here you can indicate that you will give discount on products from one or more categories.
    • Get X discount on all items in more or one Customer group Here you can select customer groups that will be given a discount, where you can configure the discount amount. The discount will be applied to all products in your online store.

Configuring discount rules

A separate configuration applies to each individual discount rule, where you indicate the discount. Also, a number of options apply to each rule:

  • Title – Here you can edit the discount rule title. You entered this same title when you created the rule in question.
  • Type – The discount rule type chosen when a new rule is created. It cannot be changed.
  • Status – Activate the status to make the discount rule become operational.
  • Stop after this rule – This is likely one of the most important settings of the discount rule. It might be the case that rules overlap, for example, if more than one rule applies to a given product. You may not want double discount to be given then, which is why you will have to use this option.

Example - You have created two discount rules. The first one applies to repeat customers, giving them a 10% discount on all products. The second one is configured as “Get X discount on all items in one or more categories”, giving customers 10% discount on all products from category X. If customers now order a product from category X, then both discount rules apply. Since discounts are calculated using the original amount, discount will be given twice, resulting in a total discount of 20%.

The Stop after this rule function is connected to the order of discount rules, through SALES > Discount rules. The order can be changed using the blue arrow icon. In this case, it is wise to put the “Get x discount for repeat customers” rule at the top, with the “Stop after this rule” option ticked. Whenever “Get x discount for repeat customers” applies, other discount rules will not be used, thus preventing double discounts. It is therefore important to keep a close eye on the order of discount rules and which ones can and/or may not collaborate.
  • Start date and deadline – Here you can configure the period during which the discount rule in question will apply.
  • Usage limit – Here you can indicate how often the discount rule may be used. It might be that the same rule is applied several times within an order. This will be deducted from the usage limit. For example, you configure the “Buy one, get one free” rule as such, that customers get one product for free when they buy three products. When a customer orders six products, he/she will get two for free and the code will be used twice.
  • Used - Here you can see how often the discount rule in question was applied. This number can be reset by clicking the blue Reset button.
