Connecting Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a very useful tool that can track how your website is performing. It tracks the number of visitors, their sources and demographics. It measures how well your eCom store sells products. It can tell you the results of online advertising and email campaigns. Review this article to connect your eCom store to Google Analytics.

  1. A Google account to use Google Analytics. For information about creating one, click here.
  2. A Google Analytics account. For information about creating one, click here.
  3. Your tracking ID from inside your Google Analytics account. For information about locating it, click here.
  4. Enhanced eCommerce enabled 

Setting up Google Analytics

  1. Login to the Lightspeed eCom Back Office.
  2. On the left menu of the eCom Back Office go to Settings and in the Website Settings column, select Web statistics Set up Google Analytics.
  3. Toggle on the switch labeled Status.
  4. Enter the tracking ID in the Tracking ID field.
  5. In the OPTIONS section, enable the switch labeled Support for advertisers to enable Google advertising cookies. This enables certain advertising features from Google. For more information, click here.
  6. The switches labeled Support for advertisers and Anonymous IP relate to disabling Google Analytics based on visitor preference. For more information, see below or click here.
  7. Toggle on the switch labeled Enable Enhanced Ecommerce features. This enables specific Google Analytics cookies that track shopping and purchasing behavior, economic performance and merchandising success.   8. Click Save.
  9. You're done! Google Analytics is now installed.

Disabling Google Analytics based on visitor preference

Businesses affected by privacy laws like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) protect the personal information of citizens. Google Analytics can track personal information. To learn more, click here.

Use the setting Start Google Analytics only when visitors accept cookies to stop tracking visitors on your website who decline cookies.

Visitors decline when they click No or ignore the banner. They will not be tracked unless they click Yes on the cookie banner. To trigger the banner again, customers would need to visit your eCom store's privacy policy page, normally located in your eCom store's footer.

When Start Google Analytics only when visitors accept cookies is toggled off, Google Analytics will track the site usage of all visitors regardless of their cookie preferences.

  1. In your eCom Back Office under Settings > Web statistics Set up Google Analytics:
    • Toggle the switch on beside Start Google Analytics only when visitors accept cookies.
    • Turn on Anonymous IP.
  2. In your eCom Back Office under Settings > Web extras COOKIE LAW, make sure Confirmation is required is selected from the dropdown list.

Upgrading to the new Google Analytics

A button labeled Upgrade to new Google Analytics appears when Google Analytics was set up before summer 2019. Clicking this button enables the new Enhanced eCommerce features as explained in this step.

Technically it also migrates Lightspeed eCom from using analytics.js to gtag.js. For more information about this migration, click here.
