In general, decreasing the amount of information your customers provide can make it easier for them to create accounts and checkout. Increase the required information only when your business needs it. Lightspeed already has its default settings to make it easy for your customers. Continue reading if you need to:
- Require stronger passwords
- Require address details
- Prevent login via Facebook
- Adjust fields in the checkout and account creation form
- Increase email accuracy
- Require a VAT number
Require stronger passwords
You can change settings to require a customer's account password be more complex. This setting trades ease of password creation and memorization for more password security. Only change this setting if required.
All password strengths require a minimum of 5 characters. The Normal password strength is the default option and has no extra requirements. The Strong option requires an additional number. The Strongest option requires both an additional number and a special character.
- Login to your eCom Back Office and click Settings.
- Click Advanced at the bottom of the General Settings column.
- Scroll down to ACCOUNTS & SERVICE and select Strong or Strongest.
- Click Save.
Require address details
When your customer create their account, you can choose whether you want to accept their address details. Making a change to these settings will not affect your checkout. The default settings is Optional.
- Login to your eCom Back Office and click Settings.
- Click Advanced at the bottom of the General Settings column.
- Scroll down to the REGISTRATION section and select Required from the dropdown menu labeled Address details.
- Click Save.
Prevent login via Facebook
To make it easier for your customers to login, by default eCom stores are set to allow customers to login using their Facebook credentials. Some businesses may find it inappropriate to offer this option for example, business to business eCom stores. To disable it:
- Login to your eCom Back Office and click Settings.
- Click Advanced at the bottom of the General Settings column.
- Scroll down to the STORE section and disable the switch labeled Social media login.
- Click Save.
Adjust fields in the checkout and account creation form
The fields your customers are required to enter can be modified. Making changes here will affect both customer account creation and checkout. The default settings are:
Disabled
- Date of birth
- COC number
- Gender
- Middle name
- National ID
Optional
- Company information
- Mobile phone
Required
- Phone number
- Region (optional for European stores)
To change them:
- Login to your eCom back office and click Settings.
- Click Advanced at the bottom of the General Settings column.
- Click a customer detail and drag it to the appropriate column. Repeat until satisfied.
- Click Save.
Increase email accuracy
By default, eCom only requires your customers to enter their email address once. You can increase email accuracy by requiring customers enter their email two times:
- Login to your eCom back office and click Settings.
- Click Advanced at the bottom of the General Settings column.
- Click the Email dropdown menu and select Double, located at the top of the page in the CUSTOMER NAME & ADDRESS section.
- Click Save.
Require a VAT number
Only for merchants who sell to european businesses
When selling business to business, you can request VAT number from businesses. By default this is Disabled. You can make it mandatory or optional. You can also make sure it's in the correct format.
- Login to your eCom back office and click Settings.
- Click Advanced at the bottom of the General Settings column.
- Click the Tax ID dropdown menu and select your preferred VAT option, located at the top of the page in the CUSTOMER NAME & ADDRESS section.
- Click Save.
NOTES:
- The VAT number field only appears when Company information is Optional or Required and a customer selects Business from the Customer type field.
- When validation is set, the VAT number field will not accept spaces. According to the European Union's website, the United Kingdom, France and Denmark have spaces in their VAT number format. If you sell to businesses in these regions, it's recommended to not use the validation option.
