As categories are your eCom store's main navigation it is important to add quality text content and images to your categories to ensure a great look and feel. It's also important to add SEO content to improve the likelihood your categories will be ranked highly in search results.
Improving the text
Improve the content by following these directions.
- Login to your eCom Back Office and click Products > Categories from the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.
- Select the category you want to work with by clicking on its title.
- Scroll down to CATEGORY INFORMATION section of the page and edit the name of the category as it appears in the main menu by entering text in the field labeled Title. Ensure the title:
- Is effective for navigation. If the category will be a visible parent category, it will be displayed on your eCom store's homepage.
- Is as short as possible. There may be space restrictions in the main menu.
- Edit the name of the category as it appears on the category page by entering text in the field labeled Full title. The name can be longer because usually there is more room for titles on a page.
- Enter a description of the category. Visibility of a description is design dependant, click here for more information.
- Scroll down to the CONTENT section of the page and enter any other content you'd like to display in the category. Visibility of content is design dependant, click here for more information.
- It is recommended that you enter text to tell customers more about the category. Unique content is important, as it improves the SEO of the category and your online store.
- Click Save.
Improving the image
The image you add in your eCom theme is usually most useful when a category's parent is set as an Overview/index type category. For more information on how to change the type of a category, click here. Exactly where and how your image will appear is dependant on your eCom store design.
- Login to your eCom Back Office and click Products > Categories from the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.
- Select the category you want to work with by clicking on its title.
- Scroll down to the IMAGE section and click Browse files to add an image. Find and select an image that represents the content of your category.
- Click Save.
Improving the SEO specifics
For some search engines, the ranking of your category in results will depend on your category's text-based appearance as much as the content added in the SEARCH ENGINES - SEO section of your category. In fact if left empty, all fields will use the information found in the CATEGORY INFORMATION section of the category automatically.
If you need to make the SEO content different from what's already found in the previous section, follow these directions:
- Login to your eCom Back Office and click Products > Categories from the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.
- Select the category you want to work with by clicking on its title.
- Scroll down to the SEARCH ENGINES - SEO section and enter the title of the category as you would like it to appear to search engines in the field labeled Page title.
- In the field labeled Meta description, add a unique description for the category page.
- In the field labeled Meta keywords, add unique keywords you used to describe the category and its contents.
Testing a category's description and content
Depending on the design of your eCom store, text entered into the fields labeled Description and Content may be displayed in unique locations or may not displayed at all. You can find out how it will be displayed by doing a quick test.
- Login to your eCom Back Office and click Products > Categories from the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.
- Select the category you want to work with by clicking on its title.
- In the field labeled Description, type
Test1
. - In the field labeled Content, type
Test2
. - Scroll down and enable to the switch labeled Include in catalog.
- Click Save.
- Click Back to Home in the left-hand sidebar.
- Click View store in the top right-hand side of the screen.
- Click on the name of your category in the main navigation of your eCom store.
- Look for Test1 or Test2 at the top of the page, right below the category title.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and look for Test1 or Test2 again.
- The location of Test1 and Test2 is where the text entered in the fields labeled Description and Content will appear.
